The Defence Forces had to dispose of a viable bomb in the Leixlip area of Kildare last night.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to the Kilmacredock area of Leixlip after being informed of a suspect device by Gardaí at 9:30pm.

The surrounding area was cordoned off and the area was declared safe at 12:05am.

The device was then removed to a secure military location for further examination where it was confirmed as viable.

Material of an evidential nature will be handed over to An Garda Síochána to assist them with their investigation.
