Bold as brass fashion junkies reveal their killer designs

THE fashion stakes were high at the Volvo Ocean Race Festival in Galway yesterday with one lady literally dressed to kill.

Grainne Wilson (17), from Clonmel Presentation School, Co Tipperary, was one of the stars of the Junk Kouture Fashion Show.

Grainne's creation, Bold as Brass -- a gold dress made from bullet casings -- wouldn't have been out of place in a Bond movie.

"We wanted to raise awareness of the huge numbers of weapons being used around the world," she explained.

The ERP Junk Kouture is a secondary level competition which challenges students to create couture outfits from recycled materials.

ERP Junk Kouture was invited to host two fashion shows at the festival which featured 20 of the competition's 2012 finalists.

Another hit was Regina Turner's creation, Tutti. Regina (16), from Colaiste Bride in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, designed her dress and made it out of piano keys.

The winner of this year's competition was also on hand to wow the crowds. Kelly Bolger (16), also from Colaiste Bride, made her creation, Lady data, out of broken pieces of computers.
