Body recovered after car goes into harbour
A MAN'S body was pulled from the water at a busy Howth pier yesterday after a car was spotted going into the sea.
Emergency services were alerted at 10.30am after a number of people reported seeing a vehicle going off the west pier at the Co Dublin harbour.
Two divers from the garda sub-aqua unit located the car, which was not visible from the pier, and brought the body of a man to the surface. Howth RNLI inshore lifeboat personnel and Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics attempted to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesman for Howth Coast Guard said it was a sad outcome to what had been a very quick response from all the emergency and rescue agencies. Gardai were understood to be treating it as a tragic incident.
