Body of man killed in US flown home

THE body of an Irishman gunned down inside the restaurant where he worked in the US arrived home yesterday as his family prepares for his funeral.

Tom Walsh (43) was brutally shot dead at the Mainstreet Grill in DeLand, Florida. The father of one from Templemore, Co Tipperary, had been living in America since 1994. His body will repose in Grey's funeral home in Templemore from 4pm tomorrow. Funeral Mass is on Easter Monday in Templemore Church at 2pm.

Hospital restricts Easter visitors

STRICT visitor restrictions will remain in place at a Dublin hospital over the Easter weekend despite an improvement in an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug. Some 300 patients at Beaumont hospital have fallen victim to the highly contagious condition over the last month.

About 10 patients are estimated to be experiencing symptoms -- down from a daily peak of about 40. A hospital spokesman remained cautious, stating that while the figures had dropped, the infection was still present.

Man quizzed over murder of father

Detectives were last night continuing to question a man over the murder of a father-of-two. Andrew Allen (24) was gunned down on February 9 by masked men at his rented home at Links View Park in Lisfannon, near Buncrana, in Co Donegal.

A man in his 50s from Northern Ireland was arrested yesterday in Co Donegal. Mr Allen had been forced to flee Derry after a death threat blamed on the vigilante group Republican Action Against Drugs.

'Heartless' gang steal church cash

GARDAI have launched a major hunt for a gang that stole more than €4,000 in cash in a raid on a presbytery in Cavan town. The money, which was in the parochial residence at Farnham Street, had been donated to the church.

A spokesperson for the local clergy said yesterday they were devastated by the "heartless theft".

Cannabis worth €80,000 seized

Cannabis herb with an estimated street value of more than €80,000 has been seized at a house in the midlands.

Gardai discovered an extensive drugs cultivation operation at Ballinamuck, Co Longford. Up to 200 cannabis plants were found in the house. A man in his 20s was questioned but was later released without charge.
