Gardaí have sealed off an area where the body of a man was found lying on the ground outside a house in Co Kerry tonight.

The body of the elderly man was found lying on the ground at Bothar Bui, a row of houses opposite Austin Stack GAA Stadium in Tralee.

"The scene is being preserved. A post mortem will take place to establish the cause of death," said a garda spokeswoman last night.

Local people said the man was aged in his early 70s and he may have been homeless.

The body was found lying near a supermarket trolley.

Tralee Labour Councillor Terry O'Brien said "This is a terribly sad incident. The hearts of the community go out to the family of this man.

"The body was found an area which is being regenerated at the present time."

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Tralee are investigating the sudden death of a man in his early 70s whose body was discovered this evening at approx. 7.15pm. at a house on Bothar Bui, Tralee.

"The local coroner has been notified and the body remains at scene and the scene is preserved.

"A post mortem will take place on Monday and the results of the post mortem will dictate the course of the investigation."

Thousands of people had been the area during the day to attend the Senior Football County Final at Austin Stack Stadium.
