Body identified as man missing for 12 months

REMAINS found in a wood two months ago have been officially confirmed as those of missing Tallaght man Paul Byrne.

Mr Byrne (20) was last seen on July 15 last year. He disappeared after he got into a wine-coloured Mitsubishi car outside his home in Kilmartin Green in Tallaght, Co Dublin.

Forest workers clearing land at Ballyfolan, near Manor Kilbride in west Wicklow, on July 29 discovered the remains which DNA tests confirmed to be Mr Byrne.

A murder hunt has now been launched.

Mr Byrne's mother, Ashley Dempsey, said yesterday: "It's a relief more than anything else to be honest. I've been waiting for this news for so long now.

"At least I can organise a funeral for Paul now and he can be somewhere we can visit him, in a proper grave."

A criminal gang is believed to have been behind Mr Byrne's murder despite the fact that he had no criminal record.
