Body found found in search for missing Tuam pensioner

THE SEARCH for a missing Tuam pensioner has been called of after a body was recovered this morning.

The elderly man, named locally as Larry Newell (80) from Sylane, Tuam, Co Galway had been missing from his home since 11.30pm last night.

A major search was undertaken into the early hours of this morning. A ground search co-ordinated by Gardai was launched at 1am and was assisted by local volunteers. It resumed at first light today.

Malin Coastguard had also assisted in the search for the elderly man who is understood to have suffered from health problems.

The Shannon Rescue Helicopter 115 was launched at around 4am this morning to assist in a search of the Sylane area, which is three miles outside of Tuam. The air unit was involved the operation for over an hour and a half but the man was not located.

The search was resumed again later in the morning but was called off shortly after 10am when a body was discovered.

Mr Newell was reported missing by a family member at 11.30pm last night when he failed to return from a walk. The elderly man had been carrying a mobile phone and gardai used a location device to narrow the search.

After an extensive search a body was discovered in a drain in the Sylane area.
