A major fire at a business premises in Co Donegal has damaged a nearby HSE storage facility and destroyed vital PPE supplies.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the blaze at Watson Hire, in Kiltoy, Letterkenny.

It is understood the fire broke out as staff were closing the shutters at 6pm on Monday.

They reported hearing an explosion inside the building filled with hire equipment, tools, home heating and gardening material.

Within minutes, a fire had taken hold and the premises was engulfed.

The blaze destroyed Watson Hire and severely damaged the adjoining HSE storage unit.

The unit contained PPE and other essential equipment, including nebulisers and wheelchairs.

The HSE said PPE stocks would be replenished, with supplies from Sligo and Tullamore arriving in Letterkenny yesterday afternoon. It has also set up a temporary storage facility at Letterkenny University Hospital.
