Black market fireworks fuel illegal ?20m-a-year trade

FIREWORKS are illegal in this country but black market trade in the items is worth a hefty ?20m a year.

Most of the fireworks on our streets are smuggled across the Border from the North, where fireworks have been outlawed since last May. Gardai estimate about 20 small-time criminals are responsible for much of the smuggling. Several firework hauls were intercepted by gardai in the run-up to Hallowe'en, including a consignment worth ?35,000 found at a Dublin business park.

Under the 1875 Explosives Act, all fireworks are classed as explosives and cannot be imported without a licence.

The most dangerous explode directly upon ignition of the fuse, while a slow fuse can cause potential victims to pick them up believing them faulty prior to detonation.
