Walker airlifted after knee injury

A MAN in his 50s was airlifted off a mountain yesterday afternoon after he slipped and injured his knee. The lone walker, who is believed to have dislocated or strained his knee, was close to the summit of Lugnaquilla, Wicklow's highest peak, when the accident happened.

It is understood that the alarm was raised by runners from the Irish Mountain Running Association who came across the man and called Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue at about 3.45pm. The man was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he was described as comfortable and stable last night.

Naval personnel face quiz over gun

NAVAL Service personnel are set to be interviewed later this week in a bid to trace a missing weapon and ammunition.

All Navy personnel who had contact with the LE Niamh, the ship whose armoury is now missing the handgun, are expected to be interviewed by a joint garda-military police team trying to trace the weapon. Between 40 and 50 Navy personnel have had contact with the patrol ship involved over the period in which the weapon is believed to have been unaccounted for.

The ship -- which, like all other Irish patrol vessels, operates from Haulbowline Naval Base in Cork -- was revealed to have a missing weapon after a routine inspection.
