Bewley's iconic tiling to remain on Dublin cafe
THE ICONIC name of Bewley's will retain its place on Westmoreland Street in Dublin.
Dublin City Council has ruled that the Bewley's tiled mosaic on the front of its former Westmoreland Street cafe in Dublin city centre cannot be removed.
Bewley's Oriental Cafes had applied to the council for permission to remove the mosaic tiling and replace it with plain tiles.
The buildings are now a Starbucks branch.
The Victorian building has borne the name Bewley's since it was first opened as a cafe in 1895.
The council said taking away the mosaic would affect the character of the protected structure.
Bewley's have declined to comment on the decision.
