Beware of psychics, priest warns festival-goers
A PRIEST has warned his parishioners against visiting fortune-tellers during the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, saying it opens their souls to evil.
Fr Conor Cunningham, parish priest for Lisdoonvarna, said consulting a fortune-teller was to worship "false gods" and parishioners could risk falling into the power of "evil spirits".
Writing in the parish newsletter, Fr Cunningham said he had seen many people suffer "horrific oppression" due to evil spirits, and that this causes "severe psychiatric damage".
The festival is the biggest and oldest of its kind in Europe, attracting more than 60,000 people to the Co Clare town every September. The event also sees hundreds of street performers, traders and fortune-tellers flocking to Lisdoonvarna.
Fr Cunningham directed any people "tempted" to visit psychics and fortune-tellers to look to the catechism of the Catholic Church, which states that "all forms of divination are to be rejected" as they contradict the "honour, respect and loving fear" Catholics should show towards God.
