Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern shrugged off the Mahon Tribunal and his dramatic resignation from Fianna Fail with a family outing to Disneyland Paris accompanied by a woman identified by Irish tourists as his estranged wife Miriam.

The family was celebrating the upcoming fifth birthday of Georgina Ahern's twins Jay and Rocco at the French amusement theme park.

But according to onlookers not even Mickey Mouse and the other attractions of Disneyland could put a smile on the face of the longest-serving Taoiseach in the history of the Irish State.

"He looked as though he had the weight of the world on his shoulders," said an Irish visitor who spotted Mr Ahern at the park.

Wearing dark shades, a black Planet Hollywood baseball cap pulled low over his face, a light blue-and-white striped shirt and dark black trousers, the former Taoiseach was clearly trying to remain as inconspicuous as possible.

One tourist described how he looked "anxious" and "uneasy" among the scores of happy holidaying families.

The under-fire ex-Taoiseach was seen waiting last Thursday morning for his grandchildren to emerge from the Playhouse Disney attraction -- a puppet show that allows children to get up close with characters from the Disney Channel including Mickey Mouse and the clubhouse crew.

As well as eldest daughter Georgina, her husband Westlife singer Nicky Byrne and their twin boys Rocco and Jay, the Ahern group included youngest daughter and best-selling author Cecelia, who is four months pregnant, her husband David Keoghan and the couple's two-year-old daughter Robin.

"They all looked like any other happy family. Nicky was great posing for photographs with fans," the tourist added.

"People recognised him and were asking him for his time.

"There wasn't many Irish holidaymakers at the resort, mostly French.

"Bertie was standing beside a blonde-haired woman who I recognised as his ex-wife Miriam and her partner Terry McCoy," the tourist said. And with the recent spate of good weather the extended family enjoyed temperatures of 22C at the fairytale paradise.

Following his revelation to the Sunday Independent last week that he was resigning from Fianna Fail, the former politician went to Nigeria where he was the keynote speaker at the Ogun State Economics Investors Forum.

He then met up with his family in Paris to enjoy a number of outings in the French capital.
