FORMER Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has claimed close to €400,000 to employ three secretaries -- despite leaving office three years ago.

He claimed €367,184 under a scheme for former taoisigh to deal with non-party administrative issues after they leave office and another €10,655 for mobile-phone expenses after stepping down in 2008.

Similar amounts were paid to John Bruton, Albert Reynolds and the late Garret Fitzgerald but they were stretched out over a 10-year period from 2001

Albert Reynolds claimed €356,712 and Garret Fitzgerald claimed €333,556, while John Bruton claimed €269,418.

The late Charles Haughey claimed €199,887 between 2001 and 2006.

Former Taoiseach Brian Cowen has claimed €32,279 to date in secretarial expenses after leaving office this year.

The figures were revealed in response to a parliamentary question asked by Wicklow Labour TD Anne Ferris.
