Dr Bernie Scully runs a successful GP practice from the Medical Centre in Clonminch, Tullamore.

In 2010, the 55-year-old received one of the highest payments of Offaly GPs from the medical card scheme at €549,818.

A patient last night revealed to the Irish Independent that Dr Scully was a "brilliant doctor".

"There's nobody as good as far as I'm concerned. She was always talking about her daughter and we just can't believe what happened.

"Nobody knows what pressures people are under and my heart goes out to the family," the woman added.

Her daughter Emily was born with severe physical and mental disabilities after she was deprived of oxygen at birth.

"The only word to describe Bernie Scully is an angel. There was nobody better to their child than her. We're absolutely devastated for her," a source said last night.

Dr Scully, who is originally from Ballyfore, near Edenderry, is separated from restaurant owner and talented chef, Haluk Barut, who regularly visited his daughter.

Dr Scully is understood to be in a relationship with Lithuanian composer and choirmaster, Andrius Kozlovskis.

Mr Kozlovskis is the person who found the mother and daughter unconscious on Saturday night. After the horrific discovery, he made a 999 call.
