It was the end of an era for Wicklow RNLI as they bid farewell to their beloved lifeboat Annie Blaker, which had been operating since the late 1980s.

Crowds lined the pier at Wicklow harbour yesterday afternoon to witness the final launch of the Tyne class vessel before it embarked on its last voyage. The Tyne class lifeboat has now been replaced by faster vessels capable of up to 25 knots; their predecessor could reach just 18 knots at full speed.

"It has been an incredibly emotional day for everyone in WRNLI," said operations manager Des Davitt.

"We have been contacted by people near and far with their memories of the Tyne. She has been an incredible lifeboat and is in every sense, another member of the crew."
