Battle looms over renaming Boyne bridge
A NEW Battle of the Boyne is looming as councillors in Meath prepare to rename Boyne Bridge after former President Mary McAleese but councillors in Louth have not yet voted on it.
The bridge on the M1 motorway spans the river near Drogheda and crosses the boundary between the two local authorities.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has supported naming it after Mrs McAleese because of her work for peace.
But Mayor of Drogheda Paul Bell says he will boycott the proposed renaming ceremony.
He asked: ''Where has the public consultation been on this?" Renaming it would impact negatively on Drogheda, he claimed.
