Bailey appeals extradition

SELF-CONFESSED murder suspect Ian Bailey lodged an appeal yesterday against his extradition to France for questioning over the murder of a film-maker.

The former journalist is wanted by officials in Paris investigating the killing of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, who was beaten to death in Ireland 14 years ago. The case was adjourned for a week.

Geoghegan jury to sit again today

The jury in the trial of the man charged with murdering rugby player Shane Geoghegan will resume its deliberations today.

The jury was sent home yesterday afternoon as Justice Paul Carney had a meeting to attend. The jury is now down to 10 members, after one man asked to be discharged yesterday as he had a flight to the US at 4am.

TDs join protests on Corrib decision

Protesters outside the Dail yesterday were joined by TDs demanding that the Government overturn a decision by the former Energy Minister Pat Carey to give Shell the go-ahead to build the final section of its controversial Corrib project.

Among the TDs in support were Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams, Caoimghin O Caolain and Aengus O Snodaigh; Joe Higgins and Richard Boyd Barrett of the United Left Alliance and Independent Finian McGrath.

Sex text teacher spared jail time

A TEACHER has been spared jail after engaging in "text sex" with a schoolgirl.

Adrian Moran (33), with an address at Kilbridge, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Roscommon, pleaded guilty at a court in Kent to three charges of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. An eight-month jail sentence was suspended. He was banned from working with children.

Puttnam to talk on future of film

ACADEMY Award winning producer David Puttnam is to deliver a special lecture in Cork on the future of film.

Mr Puttnam -- a resident of West Cork -- will deliver a talk on the future of film in the Gresham Metropole Hotel at 8.30pm tomorrow.

Back injury man winched off island

A man who suffered back injuries had to winched off a small island off the Connemara coast yesterday.

The 50-year-old was injured on the isolated island of Inis Treabhair off the Co Galway coast.
