A fire that broke out at the office of Athletics Ireland this week is being treated as a suspected arson attack.

It ripped through the reception area of the building at Northwood Court, Block 2, Ballymun, Dublin, on Monday morning and gardaí confirmed "considerable damage" was done.

Gardaí have recovered samples from the scene, which have been sent to a forensics lab. They are reviewing CCTV.

"All the indications at the moment are that this was not accidental," a source said.

Athletics Ireland CEO Hamish Adams said it was lucky the fire happened during the early hours of a bank holiday weekend when no staff were in the office. "There's not much we know at this stage except that there was a fire and that our offices were totally gutted. Everything inside at the time was destroyed, including paperwork, computers and furniture," he said.
