At a glance

•No domestic water charges for at least another three years.

•Plans to install water meters in the country's 1.2 million homes by 2014, when the charges will be imposed.

•Each household will be given a free amount of 40 litres of water per person per day. Above that, they will pay for every litre of water they use. The bigger the amount, the larger the monthly bill.

•The National Pension Reserve Fund agreed in principle to fund the €550m for installation of water meters.

•A water regulator will be appointed to set the charges. The money goes to local authorities to pay for water treatment and supply.
