Assistant commisioner posts for two top gardai

TWO new garda assistant commissioners have been selected, writes Tom Brady.

It is expected that Chief Supt John Twomey, who has been in charge of the Dublin south central division at Pearse Street, will be placed in charge of the force's national traffic bureau.

He replaces Eddie Rock, who retired from the force late last year. The second new assistant is Chief Supt Jack Nolan, who is currently responsible for the Garda training college in Templemore. His promotion will not take place until the retirement of Louis Harkin later in the year.

The Government gave permission for a range of promotions in the force to fill existing gaps created by retirements and resignations -- despite the overall embargo in the public service.
