Artist offers reward for stolen sculptures

Elaine Keogh

AUDACIOUS thieves have stolen two bronze sculptures weighing one-and-a-half tonnes from the garden of the artist who made them. The theft is the latest in a series of robberies of art works for scrap metal.

Renowned sculptor Sandra Bell, whose works have been exhibited across Ireland as well as in Britain, Norway and the United States, is offering a reward for the safe return of the two pieces.

But she believes they are destined to be sold as scrap metal.

The thieves struck late on Monday night or in the early hours of Tuesday morning while she and her family were asleep.

The two 9ft-tall sculptures, entitled 'Eternity' and 'Granuaile', are made of cast bronze and were taken from the garden of her home in Killin, Co Louth.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the art works can contact gardai in Hackballscross on 042 9377142.
