Gardaí will post a visible presence of armed units in the Mulhuddart area, following the shooting of Charlie Cooper.

During a press conference at Blanchardstown garda station, investigating officers said they had managed to talk to the victim on Monday night.

However no specific motive has yet been established for the attack.

Officers are now satisfied that Mr Cooper's injuries, while serious, are not life threatening after he underwent surgery in Connolly Hospital.

Garda Superintendent Liam Carolan said a man wearing a balaclava and dark clothes managed to get into the back garden of the victim's house.

"Our information is that a person dressed all in black, and with a balaclava went to the rear garden of an address and fired a number of shots through the window of that address," he said.

Mr Cooper managed to get out the front door but was followed by the gunman who fired a number of further shots.

The attacker then left in what was described by witnesses as a medium-sized black car.
