A female post-office worker was assaulted during a terrifying raid by a gang of three armed men.

Gardaí are investigating the robbery that occurred at a post office in Kilanerin, Gorey, Co Wexford shortly after noon yesterday.

Three men, believed to be armed with a firearm, a sledgehammer and a pickaxe handle, entered the premises, threatened staff and demanded cash.

Gardaí confirmed a female member of staff was assaulted during the robbery.

The raiders fled the scene in the direction of Tinahely, Co Wicklow, with a small amount of cash in a grey-coloured Land Rover Sport, partial registration 151 D.

In a statement, gardaí said this vehicle had been driven by a fourth man.

A burnt-out vehicle was later located at Clonegal, Co Carlow.

This vehicle has been seized by gardaí for technical examination.
