Aras celebrates 75 years since first President
MANY of the famous faces who once called the imposing 'Aras' home last night gathered to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first President to sit under it's cavernous roof.
President Michael D Higgins welcomed many of his predecessors back to the Phoenix Park residence to mark the date – June 25, 1938 – that President Douglas Hyde first took office.
Three generations of the Hyde family returned to Aras an Uachtarain last night from his great-great grandson, Douglas Leonard Sealy (15), up to the President's grand-daughter Lucy Hyde Sealy (79).
Among those mingling at the celebration were former Presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese and Maeve Hillery, the wife of the late President Patrick Hillery.
Relatives of other former Presidents including Sean T O Ceallaigh, Eamon de Valera, Erskine Childers and Cearbhall O Dalaigh were also in attendance.
Former President Robinson said the office had evolved to be "very close to the people", and that President Higgins was "very appropriate for the time".
