The new year could see construction starting on a €2.5m 'urban beach' and outdoor swimming pool in Dún Laoghaire harbour. as planning permission has been lodged by Dún Laoghaire Harbour company.

A planning application seeking permission has been lodged by Dún Laoghaire Harbour company.

If approved, building is expected to commence in late 2014 on the beach and pool, which could hold up to 125 people, as well as a cafe, lounge area, changing and toilet facilities and wind shielding screens.

The submission was lodged to Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and was inspired by the Badeschiff facility in Berlin. Its location could be alongside Berth 1, near the harbour's east pier. They're hoping to keeping entry price competitive and are expecting entry to the facility to cost around the same as a cinema ticket.

The harbour company are hoping that it will be worth up to €1m annually to the local economy and will create 10 jobs to the area, with some of them being part-time.

It's envisaged that the facility will open by April 2015.
