Appeal for witnesses in attack on elderly woman

John Fallon

Gardai want to speak to a couple who may have encountered a man shortly before he broke into a house and assaulted an elderly woman in the early hours of 2010.

The 80-year-old woman was treated for shock and minor injuries after the incident on New Year's Day at Shantalla, west of Galway city.

The pensioner, who lived alone, was subjected to a frightening attack after the man burst into her home between 12.15am and 1.30am. The attacker is described as tall, about six feet in height, clean shaven, with short dark hair, and aged in his early 20s. He fled after taking some items.

Gardai are hopeful that he may have been spotted in the area as he was not wearing a coat despite temperatures of minus six degrees at the time.

"We are particularly anxious to talk to a couple who were walking towards the centre of Shantalla around that time," said a garda spokesperson.

An incident room has been set up at Mill Street station (091-538000).
