Another million euro is being given to the United Nations' relief efforts for refugees fleeing Syria.

With peacekeepers due to fly out this week for UN duties in the Golan Heights, the Government has increased its aid to deal with the seven million people displaced by the civil war - one third of the population.

The money will go towards providing food, water, sanitation, protection and shelter to refugees in the areas of greatest need.

The latest contribution brings Ireland's support in response to the refugee crisis in Syria and neighbouring countries to almost 11 million euro.

Joe Costello, junior minister for trade and development, made the announcement.

"The recent announcement that one million Syrian children are now refugees is yet another stark reminder of the immense human suffering caused by this horrific civil war," he said.

"To put this statistic into context, in Ireland this figure equates to almost every child under the age of 18 being forced to flee their homes. These children have suffered terrible trauma and lost their homes."

Tanaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore will discuss the crisis in Syria at a meeting of EU foreign ministers at the end of the week in Vilnius, Lithuania, which US secretary of state John Kerry will also attend.
