Angie Best, the former wife of football ace George Best and mother of Calum, is helping to create a range of CBD beauty products for Irish women.

The 67-year-old became famous in her own right when she launched a fitness career and began training celebrity clients, including pop star Cher and actresses Sharon Stone and Daryl Hannah.

Now she is backing the latest wellness trend of beauty products infused with CBD, or cannabidiol, some of which have been used by celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Alessandra Ambrosio in oil form for a range of reasons, including helping with anxiety and relieving aches and pains.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent Ms Best said: "I have used CBD beauty products but I haven't used this range yet because we are currently in the process of making it and we hope it will be available for the Christmas market."

In addition to "reducing inflammation" she says the products work by "supporting epidermal layers of the skin" to bring the "spring-like quality that ageing ladies want".

She added: "Gwyneth Paltrow and a host of movie stars are into this because it is so magnificent for your skin, it makes you look so good."

However, while endorsing the products, the former model, who has written a series of books for over-40s women, says her best beauty tip is still all natural and free. She said "exercise is the best anti-ageing in the world".

She also advises: "Drink lots of water and I would say - for women of a certain age - get enough protein."

Ms Best is working with a Monaghan-based cannabis (hemp) farm to create the products, under the name Hu Botanical.

The Hu Botanical company is owned by Irish entrepreneur Michael Lynch.

Meanwhile, CBD is currently being used in deodorant, dog chews, kitchen degreasers, seltzers and spray tans - each promising a range of health benefits.

The oil has been praised for treating insomnia, de-stressing the mind and preventing skin breakouts, although there is no conclusive science - and the actual benefits of CBD are still being debated.

Most recently, actress Liv Tyler opened up about her ongoing battle with anxiety, revealing that she takes a daily dose of CBD oil in order to treat her nerves and worry.

The 42-year-old, who lives primarily in London with her partner and three children, shared the remedy while filming a beauty routine video, explaining that she takes a CBD oil tincture every morning while she is getting ready for the day - but noting that it "doesn't make you feel stoned at all".

CBD oil is a legal cannabinoid that can be sold in Ireland.

It is extracted from the cannabis plant but does not contain THC, the compound that makes you high.
