A one-year-old baby boy has died in a farming accident in Co Kilkenny.

Gardai confirmed to Independent.ie that the baby passed away after the tragic accident believed to have happened on the family farm in Johnswell.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 3pm today.

It is understood the boy's heartbroken parents - who have three older children - are being comforted this evening by their family and friends.

Parish priest Fr Frank Purcell said the community has been left devastated.

Fr Purcell said: "It's an unimaginably tragic loss for his parents, siblings and extended family.

"Our hearts and prayers are with them at this time, the entire Johnswell community and beyond are thinking of them and they are in our thoughts and prayers.

"We hope their many friends and strong faith can help them at this time."

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Authority confirmed that an inspector attended the scene.
