An Post employee (60s) killed in two car collision

A man in his 60s was killed in a two car collision in Co Mayo early this morning.

The collision occurred on the R312, Keenagh Cross Roads, Co Mayo at approximately 10am.

A man in his mid 60s, named by his employers An Post as Matty Merrick, was the sole occupant of the car and was believed to be working at the time.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and was removed to Mayo General Hospital.

The occupants of the second car, a male and female in their early 30s have been brought to Mayo General with non-life threatening injuries.

The road has been closed for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions are in place.

David McRedmond, CEO of An Post, has extended his sympathy on behalf of the company to the family of Matty Merrick who was a long serving mails contractor with An Post.

David McRedmond said he was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Mr Merrick. He extended his deepest sympathy and that of An Post to Mr Merrick’s family and his work colleagues.
