Tributes have been paid to a 19-year-old student who passed away suddenly after falling in a property off-campus in Limerick.

The 19-year old Galway native, named locally as Sophie Coll, from Barna, sustained critical injuries in the fall.

Gardai confirmed they are treating the tragedy as an accidental death.

Ms Coll, who was studying at the University of Limerick, had been rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick Intensive Care Unit, but sadly lost her battle for life.

The second-year business student had only recently transferred to the college from NUI Galway, college sources said.

Sophie's school friend, Leona Colohan, told that she is devastated by her friend's passing.

"I spent six years with Sophie in secondary school and she is an absolute lady with a heart of gold, she would do anything for you. She was a great friend to have and it is just so sad that she is gone. She will never be forgotten. RIP princess."

Fr John Campion, UL Chaplain said he was “supporting” Ms Coll’s family in trying to come to terms with the tragedy.

“We are supporting the family at this time, as well as (Sophie’s) classmates, and housemates, as part of our pastoral care protocol,” Fr Campion said.

“We will be holding a class service as well, in the next week or two,” Fr Campion added.

He described Ms Coll’s death as “a freak accident”.

In an email to staff and students, UL President, Des Fitzgerald, stated: “It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of the sudden death of UL student Sophie Coll, 2nd year, BBS International as a result of a tragic accident on Monday, 25th September.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Sophie’s parents Rory and Carol, her sisters Stephanie and Abbie, her friends, housemates, and fellow students. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis,” Mr Fitzgerald added.

The Students' Union at Limerick University offered their condolences to the Coll family.

"On behalf of the Students' Union, we issue our sincere sympathies to Sophie's family and friends. The SU is here to support all students in the coming days and weeks. May she rest in peace."

Sophie's funeral will take place on Saturday, September 30 at 1 p.m. Funeral after Mass to Furbo cemetery.
