All downhill for young ski squads

THE lack of ski slopes here is no deterrent for a determined group of secondary school students who will be skiing for their country in the Italian Alps, writes Alison Bray.

Eleven students from both sides of the border will take on their counterparts from around the world at the World Schools Championship in Aosta Valley from March 5-10.

It's the first time that Ireland has participated in the alpine ski race.

The squads include a six-member under-15 girls' team and a five-member under-17 boys' team.

They were selected from a group of 74 students from 35 schools across Ireland who applied to be on the team last summer.
