Agency staff to get €2.5m in backpay 'by end of month'
HUNDREDS of agency staff, who have been waiting over six months to get €2.5m worth of backpay owed to them by the Health Services Executive (HSE), will finally be paid what they are owed before the end of the month.
The agency nurses and health care assistants are owed the eight months of backpay following the introduction of an EU directive that meant agency staff must be paid the same as directly employed workers doing the same job.
One health care assistant, employed by agency CPL at a Dublin hospital and who is on a salary of €22,000, told how she had been waiting months for the €3,000 she is owed in backpay.
However, the HSE said it has now paid all money owed to nurses employed through Nurse on Call, while approximately 60pc of the health care assistants employed through CPL have now been paid what they are owed.
The HSE estimates the new pay rates for agency staff will cost an extra €30m a year.
