Pat Rabbitte may have been shocked by the apparent ageism he was treated with when appearing on 'Morning Ireland' this week, but RTE news anchor Bryan Dobson says he has never experienced anything of the sort in RTE.

"No I haven't encountered ageism at all actually," he told the Irish Independent. "But I am only 53 so give me a few more years."

Rabbitte made the statement after he was asked if he felt he was near retirement.

"I haven't seen or read that," Dobson said. "So I couldn't possibly comment."

Dobson was speaking at the launch of Samaritans Talk to Us and spoke about the difficulties young men face when it comes to opening up and confronting depression.

"I think it's the first thing you need to do if you have issues in your life is to share them with people because if you keep them bottled up they get bigger and bigger and bigger don't they?" Dobson said. "And they get more and more overwhelming."

He was speaking at the launch of the Samaritans' national awareness campaign which will run across the months of July and August.

Volunteer Majella Canty said that most calls nowadays relate to issues around finances, loneliness and relationships.

Anyone seeking help from the Samaritans should call 116 123.
