Health Minister Simon Harris was taken to task by pro-life Senator Rónán Mullen yesterday for appearing to laugh after he was asked when he would take part in debates on the abortion referendum.

Mr Mullen said: "Why did you appear to laugh about when and what debates you are going to do?"

He was speaking at the Oireachtas Health Committee where Fianna Fail TD Margaret Murphy O'Mahony put the original question on debates to Mr Harris.

Mr Harris replied: "The reason I laughed was that I recalled the image last week in the middle of the cervical-cancer scandal where we were trying to reassure women about their own health.

"There was photo shoot outside Leinster House with a podium asking where I was.

"I think it was obvious to every woman in this country exactly where I was," he added.
