Abortion only item up at Fine Gael party meeting
THE Government’s abortion legislation is the only item up for discussion at a meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party this evening.
The meeting is expected to be stormy, with TDs and senators setting out their views. The contentious issue dominated last week’s meeting, and will do so again tonight.
One TD who has vowed to oppose the abortion legislation is expected to see Taoiseach Enda Kenny before the meeting to outline his concerns.
Galway West TD Brian Walsh has reservations about including the threat of suicide as grounds for abortion.
Mr Walsh said “out of courtesy” to Mr Kenny, he wants to tell the Taoiseach where he stands ahead of the meeting.
Some Fine Gael sources claimed there had been a “softening” of opinion since the bill was published, with people backing down from previous trenchant positions.
However, others are still strongly opposed to the measures.
The abortion bill was also discussed by the Labour Parliamentary Party this lunchtime, although Junior Health Minister Alex White said it was only touched on briefly.
One Labour source described it as a “win” for their party.
