A wedding ceremony defined by courage

IT was a moving, inspirational ceremony defined by the courage of both the bride and groom.

Talented hurler Des Fitzgerald (left) -- who last October was left temporarily paralysed following a freak sports accident -- married his long-time girlfriend Sarah McEvoy at Holy Cross Church, Charleville, Co Cork, last Friday.

Mr Fitzgerald has been undergoing treatment in the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, since November for the spinal injury that left him paralysed from the chest down. Cork hurler Donal Og Cusack said Mr Fitzgerald was "an inspiration to everyone".

In a moving tribute to his new bride, Mr Fitzgerald described himself as the "luckiest man in Ireland".
