651 'prisoners' help gardai smash handcuff record
THE gardai got one up on the Canadian mounties yesterday -- without even having to bring out their horses.
Members of the force smashed a previous Guinness world record held by the Canadian Mounted Police when they handcuffed the longest chain of people in recorded history in Bray, Co Wicklow.
A grand total of 651 people agreed to become inseparable in imitation handcuffs for charity, compared with the mounties' record of 562.
With the help of off-duty gardai and reserves, members of the public willingly allowed themselves to be 'nicked' in imitation handcuffs on the town's famous promenade.
Proceeds from the event go to the Chernobyl Children's Project International, disability group Open Door and Bray Old Folks' Community.
Garda and event organiser John Fitzpatrick did the official count along with Cllr David Grant, the cathaoirleach of Bray Town Council.
