€6.6m wasted on sports campus

Over €6.6m was spent on design for facilities on the National Sports Campus that will never be built.

Planning permission has been received for additional buildings on the campus, but the current economic climate means it is unlikely further development will take place there.

HSE rules out mixing hospitals

The building of private hospitals in the grounds of public hospitals is over. The HSE says all discussions with preferred bidders for co-location hospitals have stopped and it has no plans to progress any of the projects.

A total of €1.46m was spent on the legal and financial costs of the axed project.

Farmleigh Forum cost €330,000

The so-called Farmleigh Forum, a gathering of business and cultural leaders aimed at getting ways to bring about economic recovery, cost the taxpayer €330,000.

A total of €61,000 was spent on catering, hotel bills came to €37,000 and €18,000 was spent on transport.

13,000 cabbies in benefit probe

A TOTAL of 13,000 taxi drivers were investigated for claiming social welfare while working.

Welfare inspectors cross-checked with other agencies and found 26,000 students out of 200,000 on welfare schemes, 2,700 landlords out of 103,000, and 13,000 taxi drivers out of 74,000.

Welfare overpaid to tune of €83m

Social welfare overpayments of €83m were made last year, with €31m of these being as a result of fraud.

With only 25pc of the overpaid money ever returned, over the past five years a total of €315m was outstanding in terms of unrecovered funds.
