€5m Lotto winner's luck holds at races
IRELAND'S latest Lotto millionaire was on another winning streak when she had a flutter at the Curragh.
But Carol Loran (39), from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, was staying tight-lipped about how much of her €5.3m fortune was being wagered at the Irish Derby yesterday.
She was coy too about which horses she had backed and how much she had won, admitting only: "I'm in great form – so far, so good. "I'm at the Curragh with my five sons and my mother and we're having a great day out."
Ms Loran became an instant millionaire last month when she shared a €10.6m jackpot with father-of-three Kevin Geoghegan (46) after buying a winning €4 Quickpick for the pair of them.
But there was no sign of Mr Geoghegan – who she had been dating for only a few weeks before the big win – at the races yesterday as she enjoyed the balmy weather with her sons Anthony (24), Ian (22), Jamie (19), Christopher (16) and eight-year-old Ethan and her mother Marian Geraghty (59).
Although she enjoyed a sip of champagne at the course yesterday, she said she is looking forward to going back to her cashier job in the Boylesports shop in Mullingar tomorrow.
"It's back to normal," she said. "I went back to work last Wednesday and I'm back again on Tuesday. I love my job. You have the regulars coming in, and I love the people I work with."
She said she still has no idea what to do with her winnings.
And so far, none of her five sons has asked her for a cent, she added. Ms Loran said she had played the lottery only a handful of times, and only bothered to have a flutter after Mr Geoghegan gave her €2 towards the ticket.
She was so cool and calm about her life-changing win that she went straight back to work after finding out they had hit the jackpot.
"I can take a shock," she said at the time.
