€500k haul of illegal cigarettes
CUSTOMS officers have seized more than a million cigarettes after an intelligence-led operation at Dublin port.
Officers intercepted the haul as it was being smuggled through the port. Its retail value was estimated at €515,000 and represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €405,000.
It was the latest in a series of seizures by Customs in the past week. On Thursday afternoon officers seized three kilos of cocaine worth €210,000 from a Polish woman, who had arrived at Dublin airport on a flight from Peru, via Amsterdam.
Officers searched the luggage of the woman, who was in her 20s, and discovered the drugs in packages, marked "con Carne". She was later questioned by gardai.
After a separate seizure at the airport on Thursday, Customs officers were given permission by a judge to confiscate two cash hauls, worth €8,000 and €9,000, which had been taken earlier from Lithuanian men as they were about to board a flight to Alicante.
A detention order was also granted for €10,035, in euro and sterling, taken from a passenger on a flight to Lagos, via Abu Dhabi.
