FEWER than 25,000 homeowners have paid the controversial household charge since the March 31 deadline, writes Paul Melia.
Only 24,098 people have registered for the €100 charge over the last one and a half months, bringing the total who have paid up to 58pc, or 940,437 households.
The Department of the Environment yesterday confirmed that penalties averaging €11 each were levied on those who paid after the deadline.
The €100 household charge was introduced in last December's Budget and was supposed to be paid by 1.62 million households across the State.
Local authorities will shortly begin pursuing homeowners who have refused to pay.
