410,000 septic tank owners can claim grant
MORE than 400,000 homeowners with registered septic tanks will be able to apply for grant aid of up to €4,000 as an inspection blitz gets under way this week, writes Louise Hogan.
But funding will only be available for homes whose systems need repair or upgrading if they fall foul of the laws, with householders footing the bill for maintaining tanks themselves.
More than 1,000 inspections are planned before the end of July, as the Environment Department told householders they could apply for the grant funding if needed under the new scheme to protect groundwater.
It is expected householders in Cork, Kerry, Galway and Donegal will face the most inspections – as they have a large number of domestic wastewater systems.
Only those who registered before the deadline of February 1 – around 410,000 households – can apply for grant aid.
The new scheme allows householders apply for up to 80pc of the approved costs, with a maximum cap of €4,000 for households on an income of up to €50,000. The amount will be reduced to a maximum of €2,500 aid for households on incomes of up to €75,000.
Leaflets providing information on the inspections and maintenance of systems are available from local authority offices and libraries.
