37 workers to lose jobs at medical devices firm

A MEDICAL devices firm has announced 37 compulsory redundancies.

The Letterkenny-based firm Medisize will lay off staff in two tranches -- 13 before Christmas and 24 by March -- reducing its workforce to just over 120.

Medisize, a division of a Swiss multinational, told trade unions the decision was taken because of a slowdown in demand for its products.

"It's a sign of the times," SIPTU industrial organiser Kevin Kenny said. "There's no investment coming into companies like this."

Unemployment in Donegal is 30pc compared with over 13.5pc nationally.
