A JOINT operation between revenue agencies north and south of the Border led to the arrests of seven men and the seizure of £2.4m (€2.8m) of illegal cigarettes yesterday.
The eight million cigarettes, thought to have originated in China, were inside a 40ft container in Forkhill, south Armagh, hidden in a shipment of under-floor heating pipes.
Five of the arrested men are from Louth, one is from Limerick and the other is from Armagh.
The cigarettes had arrived in Dublin Port via Rotterdam. Revenue Commissioners followed them to the Border.
