28,500 line up to join ranks after recruitment ban lifted

Enda Dowling

ALMOST 2,000 people have registered an interest in the past fortnight in joining the garda, bringing the total number who want to join the force to 28,500.

The surge in numbers registering their interest in joining An Garda Siochana on the Public Appointments Service (PAS) website comes after the Government announced two weeks ago there will be an end to the recruitment freeze. According to the spokesperson, the PAS does not yet know when the official application process for the new garda jobs will begin, but that "they are likely to start some time after September".

Justice Minister Alan Shatter, pictured, announced the end to the recruitment freeze during a graduation ceremony for reservists at the Garda College in Templemore on July 15.
