€2.7m creche grants 'a drop in the ocean'
GRANTS worth €2.7m for the improvement of childcare facilities, which were announced by Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald, are a "drop in the ocean", it has been claimed.
The minister announced the grants to 671 creche and preschool facilities to allow them purchase equipment or carry out small maintenance work.
It would also go towards improving accessibility for children with disabilities.
However, commenting on yesterday's announcement, Teresa Heeney, of Early Childhood Ireland, which represents pre-school facilities, said this was not a "new" investment stream into the sector.
She added: "It is a continuum of the capital funding programme announced by Minister Fitzgerald last year."
