A LOTTO syndicate have hailed their luck in winning €25,000 despite the fact that they were just a single number away from winning €4.5m.

And the mothers in the 16-strong group are planning to put the money toward back-to-school costs. The women at the Youghal Enterprise Centre (YEC) won the cash on August 20 after matching five numbers plus the bonus number in the Lotto draw.

Syndicate member Catherine Desmond said: "We all feel extremely lucky at the moment."

The YEC opened three years ago and is devoted to helping small enterprises and boosting job creation in the east Cork area.

The syndicate members are Catherine Desmond, Helen Coady, Margaret Ryan, Lorraine Hogan, Noreen McKernan, Mary Carson, Aileen Murray, Clodagh Mahon, Mary Murphy, Carmel Best, Ruth Howard, Sam Garvey, Irene Hennessey, Sinead Goggin, Louise Scanlon and Helen O'Brien.

Meanwhile, a Dublin man was delighted to pick up a cheque for €350,000 at National Lottery offices -- his prize for matching the first six numbers drawn in Wednesday's Lotto Plus 1 draw.

"This is incredible," said the man, who wished to enjoy his win in private.
