2,000 expected at funeral

THE priest who will celebrate the funeral Mass for murdered Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe has called on anyone who cannot attend to send "their strength, support and love to his family and work colleagues".

Fr Michael Cusack was a good friend of Gda Donohoe and has been asked to help celebrate the Mass at the special request of Gda Donohoe's widow, Caroline.

More than 2,000 mourners are expected to attend the state funeral at St Joseph's Redemptorist Church at St Alphonsus Road, Dundalk, Co Louth.

In attendance will be the Taoiseach, the Tanaiste and TDs from across the political spectrum, as well as 40 coachloads of gardai travelling from from all over the country.

The remains of Gda Donohoe will be removed from his home at Lordship, Jenkinstown, Dundalk at 11.30am, arriving at the church at 12.30pm. The remains will be taken back to Gda Donohoe's home town of Lordship for burial at St Mary's cemetery.

The coffin will be carried in stages by members of local GAA club St Patrick's, before being passed over to members of An Garda Siochana for the final stage.

Meanwhile, the Dail will adjourn for several hours as a mark of respect and to allow ministers and TDs to attend his funeral.

The Dail will resume business at 4pm and the second half of the debate on Fianna Fail's motion opposing the closure of garda stations will take place from 9.30pm with the vote at 11pm.
